Google is combining Android and ChromeOS into one system, but ChromeOS isn’t going away anytime soon. Despite the upcoming launch of Aluminum OS, new testimony from Google’s antitrust case reveals that ChromeOS will remain for at least another eight years.

Aluminum OS and ChromeOS Support

Google is developing Aluminum OS to merge Android and ChromeOS. While this new platform will arrive in the next two years, the testing phase will begin later this year. Court documents obtained by The Verge suggest a full release could happen by 2028.

However, Google’s commitment to 10 years of updates for ChromeOS devices means the operating system won’t disappear quickly. Even after Aluminum OS launches, some existing Chromebook hardware won’t be compatible with the new system. To honor its support promise, Google will maintain ChromeOS until at least 2033. According to court documents, ChromeOS will be phased out by 2034.

ChromeOS Commitment Confirmed

In a January interview, Google’s head of ChromeOS, John Maletis, confirmed this commitment to 10 years of updates. “This year, you will see us focus on addressing pain points we hear consistently from customers,” he said, referring to ChromeOS improvements. He emphasized that the 10-year support window for ChromeOS is essential for users.

Security Concerns for Education and Workplaces

Since ChromeOS launched in 2011, it has been popular in education and some workplaces, especially with low-cost Chromebooks. However, it hasn’t gained mainstream appeal like Windows or macOS. The potential end of updates for ChromeOS could have serious security implications, particularly for educational laptops used worldwide. The lack of updates could leave devices vulnerable to security threats, similar to the issues faced when Windows 10 lost support.

Looking Ahead to Aluminum OS

The ChromeOS future remains stable, even as Aluminum OS makes its way to users. Google’s commitment to ChromeOS updates reassures current users, while the company fine-tunes Aluminum OS. Users will enjoy continued support for ChromeOS until 2034, allowing time for a smooth transition as Google works on its new, unified platform.
