Google is planning to replace ChromeOS with a new platform called Aluminium OS. This platform combines the best features of ChromeOS and Android. Recently, a bug report on the Google Chrome Issue Tracker revealed the first glimpse of Aluminium OS, although not in the way Google would have preferred.
The bug report, discovered by 9to5Google, included two screen recordings from an HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook. These videos show the early stages of Aluminium OS development, referencing Android 16 and a matching build number from the report. While Google hasn’t officially shared these clips, Android Authority uploaded them to YouTube. For now, viewers can watch the videos before they are removed.
Aluminium OS shows early progress
In the videos, Aluminium OS runs in split-screen mode, showing two Chrome windows side by side. The design resembles ChromeOS but with notable changes. One key adjustment is the placement of the start button, which has moved to the center of the taskbar.
A new, taller status bar now runs along the top of the software. This bar displays battery levels, connectivity status, and the time, including seconds. It also shows a Gemini indicator and a pill icon to indicate that a screen recording is in progress.
Though the videos are not a complete tour of the operating system, they offer a useful glimpse into the development of Aluminium OS. It appears that the software is making good progress, especially since it’s running on existing hardware like the HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook.
What to expect from Aluminium OS
Aluminium OS aims to enhance the user experience for both ChromeOS and Android users. The operating system is expected to offer more integrated features and a streamlined design across multiple devices. This could improve how Google’s software works on Chromebooks, tablets, and smartphones.
Google’s Android head recently teased that more information about Aluminium Operating System will come in 2026. It’s possible that the company will announce more details at its I/O event, which typically introduces major software updates. If Google follows its usual schedule, we can expect more information in May 2026.
