If you’re using a Mac from before 2018 and rely on Google Chrome, there’s bad news. Google will soon stop supporting Chrome on older Macs. This will leave owners of pre-2018 devices at risk of missing future updates.

Mac From Before 2018 Will Lose Chrome Support

Google will cut off Chrome support for macOS 12 Monterey and earlier versions later this year. Chrome 150 will be the last version for macOS 12, which launched in October 2021. From Chrome 151, users will need macOS 13 Ventura or later to get updates.

For Mac owners with devices from before 2017, upgrading to macOS 13 Ventura won’t be possible.

Which Macs Are Affected?

Older Macs like the 2017 iMac, pre-2018 MacBook Airs, and pre-2017 MacBook Pros can’t upgrade to macOS Ventura. Macs made before 2016 and certain Mac mini desktops also won’t get the update. If you aren’t sure, visit Apple’s support page to check compatibility.

What Happens After Chrome 150?

After Chrome 150, users on macOS 12 will still be able to use Chrome. However, the lack of security updates will make the browser less secure. Older versions of Chrome may have vulnerabilities that Google can’t fix. If you’re on an outdated OS, consider upgrading your device or switching browsers.

Upgrading to macOS 13 Ventura

If your Mac is eligible for an upgrade, go to System Settings > General > Software Update and click “Upgrade Now.” This will let you continue receiving Chrome updates.

Alternatives for Older Mac Users

If your Mac can’t upgrade to macOS Ventura, you can try a different browser like Mozilla Firefox. However, Firefox will also stop supporting older macOS versions, such as Sierra (10.12), High Sierra (10.13), and Mojave (10.14), by February 2026.

What You Need to Do Now

If you use a Mac from before 2018 and can’t upgrade, consider switching to newer hardware or another browser. Staying updated is vital to avoid security risks.
