Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday Update Problems

Windows 11 users faced major issues after the January 2026 Patch Tuesday updates. The updates introduced multiple bugs, causing Microsoft to release two emergency out of band updates. The first update fixed problems with remote desktop connections and hibernation failures. But, more issues emerged, particularly with cloud applications like Outlook, OneDrive, and Dropbox. To fix this, Microsoft issued a second out of band update.

Fixes in the Latest Out of Band Update

On January 24, 2026, Microsoft released the KB5078127 update. It addresses issues that caused Outlook and other cloud-backed applications to stop working. The problem arose when users tried opening or saving files on cloud storage services like OneDrive and Dropbox. Some Outlook users even experienced crashes, especially if they stored PST files on OneDrive. The update resolves these issues and removes the need to uninstall January’s security updates as a workaround.

Additional Updates in KB5078127

KB5078127 also includes protections and improvements from the January 2026 security updates. It bundles fixes from the first out of band update, released on January 17. That update addressed issues like failed shutdowns and Remote Desktop connection problems. Microsoft is rolling out this latest update to other versions, including Windows 11 version 23H2 and Windows Server editions. Users should check the Windows release health dashboard for updates related to their specific version.

Second Emergency Update in a Week

This is the second emergency out of band update within a week. The first update, released on January 17, fixed critical issues like failed shutdowns and hibernation problems in version 23H2. However, that update caused new issues with apps such as Outlook, OneDrive, and Dropbox. Microsoft quickly addressed these problems with the release of KB5078127.

Impact on Windows 11 Users

The January Patch Tuesday updates were meant to improve security and stability, but they caused significant disruptions for users. The out of band updates are crucial for restoring functionality to key apps like Outlook and OneDrive. However, the need for multiple emergency updates in such a short time may frustrate users relying on these tools for daily work.
