MacBook Neo marks Apple’s biggest move yet into the budget laptop market. The company introduced the $599 device to compete directly with lower-priced Windows laptops and Chromebooks.

For decades Apple avoided the low-end laptop segment. However, faster iPhone processors have changed the economics of Mac hardware. As a result, Apple can now offer a cheaper laptop without sacrificing core performance.

The MacBook Neo costs $400 less than Apple’s previous entry-level laptop. The current MacBook Air starts at $1,099. Therefore, the new model significantly lowers the price of entering the Mac ecosystem.

Apple hopes the machine will attract students, first-time Mac buyers, and budget-focused consumers. In addition, organizations may consider it for large-scale deployments due to its lower cost.

Design and display

MacBook Neo features a compact 13-inch display. That size makes it one of Apple’s smallest laptops available today.

The screen supports brightness levels of up to 500 nits. This matches the brightness offered by the MacBook Air.

Apple will offer the laptop in several bright colors. Buyers can choose citrus, silver, indigo, and blush finishes. These options give the machine a youthful appearance that may appeal strongly to students.

Despite the lower price, Apple kept its premium aluminum design. The MacBook Neo still uses the same durable material found in higher-end Mac laptops.

The device weighs about 2.7 pounds. Therefore, it remains light enough for daily portability.

Performance and processor

The MacBook Neo introduces a significant technical change for Apple laptops. The device runs on the A18 Pro chip, a processor originally designed for the iPhone.

This marks the first time Apple has used a smartphone processor inside a Mac computer. However, the company believes the chip delivers more than enough performance for everyday tasks.

Users can handle activities such as web browsing, video calls, document editing, and photo work smoothly. In addition, the laptop can run both macOS applications and many iPhone apps.

Apple also claims the device delivers strong artificial intelligence performance. According to the company, the machine runs AI tasks up to three times faster than many competing PC laptops.

Battery life and specifications

MacBook Neo delivers battery life of up to 16 hours on a single charge. This figure sits slightly below the 18-hour rating of the MacBook Air with the M5 chip.

Even so, the battery performance remains competitive in the laptop market. Many Windows laptops in the same price range offer shorter battery life.

The base configuration includes 256 gigabytes of storage. Apple also offers a $699 upgrade that doubles the storage capacity.

The higher-priced configuration includes Touch ID as well. This feature allows users to log in securely and approve payments with a fingerprint.

Connectivity and features

MacBook Neo supports WiFi 6E for faster wireless connections. It also includes a 1080p FaceTime camera for video calls.

The device provides two USB-C ports and a standard headphone jack. These connections allow users to charge the laptop and connect accessories.

Apple also equipped the machine with a full keyboard and large trackpad. Although the system targets budget buyers, the company retained many core Mac features.

Market strategy

The launch represents a strategic shift for Apple. The company historically focused on premium laptop segments with higher margins.

However, competition from Windows PCs and Chromebooks remains strong in schools and budget markets. Therefore, Apple sees an opportunity to capture new customers with a lower-priced Mac.

The MacBook Neo could also serve as an entry point into Apple’s broader ecosystem. New buyers who purchase the laptop may later consider products like iPhones, iPads, or Apple Watches.

Sales pressure on the Mac division may have also influenced the decision. Apple recently reported weaker Mac sales during the holiday season.

Revenue from Mac computers dropped about 6.7 percent to $8.39 billion. Analysts had expected sales to exceed $9 billion.

Apple product launch week

The MacBook Neo launch arrives during a busy week for Apple hardware announcements.

Earlier in the week the company introduced the iPhone 17e and a new M4-powered iPad Air. Apple also refreshed the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air lineups along with its Studio Display monitor.

With the MacBook Neo, Apple is clearly expanding its laptop strategy. The company now offers devices that range from premium professional machines to more affordable consumer models.

Whether the new budget Mac will attract large numbers of buyers remains to be seen. However, the MacBook Neo could reshape expectations about how affordable Apple laptops can become.
