Samsung is once again preparing to refresh its flagship lineup, with the Galaxy S26 expected to arrive in early 2026. While early rumors hinted at a possible Galaxy S26 Pro, the latest and most reliable leaks suggest Samsung is sticking to a familiar strategy, offering a standard Galaxy S26 that builds incrementally on the Galaxy S25. This comparison takes a broad and detailed look at how the Galaxy S26 is expected to differ from the Galaxy S25, helping current owners decide whether an upgrade makes sense.

The Galaxy S26 is expected to refine rather than reinvent Samsung’s flagship formula. Leaks point to a slightly updated design, a larger display, a more powerful chipset, an upgraded ultrawide camera, and a modest battery boost. While none of these changes are revolutionary on their own, together they paint a clearer picture of Samsung’s direction for its base flagship.

Design and size changes

One of the most visible changes expected on the Galaxy S26 is the redesign of the rear camera layout. After several generations of individual camera cutouts, Samsung is reportedly moving to a pill-shaped camera island. Leaked renders suggest this new design will visually group the lenses, giving the phone a more unified and modern look.

In comparison, the Galaxy S25 retains the familiar minimalist design with separate camera rings and a compact form factor. The S26 is expected to grow slightly due to a larger screen, increasing from 6.2 inches on the S25 to 6.3 inches. This makes the phone marginally taller and wider, though not dramatically so. According to leaks, the weight difference will be minimal, with the Galaxy S26 expected to weigh around 164 grams, just two grams heavier than its predecessor.

Materials are expected to remain consistent. Samsung will likely continue using a glass and metal sandwich design, though the exact version of Gorilla Glass may change. The Galaxy S25 uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and the S26 could feature a newer variant for improved durability. Color options for the Galaxy S26 remain largely unknown, apart from a deep blue shade seen in renders. The Galaxy S25, by contrast, launched with a wide range of color choices.

Display differences

The Galaxy S26 is expected to follow the industry trend of gradually increasing screen sizes. A 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display is rumored, up from 6.2 inches on the Galaxy S25. While resolution details have not leaked yet, it is widely expected to remain at Full HD+ levels, similar to the 1080 x 2340 resolution used on the S25.

The Galaxy S25 already offers an excellent display, with high pixel density and strong brightness performance. Samsung advertises peak brightness of up to 2600 nits, and real-world testing confirms impressive visibility even in direct sunlight. The Galaxy S26 is expected to match or slightly improve on this, though dramatic gains are unlikely.

Bezels appear unchanged in leaked renders, and Samsung is expected to retain its ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner. This suggests that while the display may grow slightly, the overall viewing experience will remain familiar.

Performance and software upgrades

Performance is one of the areas where the Galaxy S26 should deliver its most noticeable improvements. Samsung is expected to use the Exynos 2600 chipset in some regions, while markets such as the US and China will likely receive the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Early benchmark leaks suggest a significant jump in both single-core and multi-core performance compared to the Snapdragon 8 Elite used in the Galaxy S25.

The Galaxy S25 already delivers strong performance, but the S26’s newer chip should provide better sustained performance, improved efficiency, and enhanced AI capabilities. RAM is expected to remain at 12GB, which is more than sufficient for heavy multitasking.

A notable change is expected in storage options. Samsung is rumored to be dropping the 128GB base model entirely, starting the Galaxy S26 lineup at 256GB. This is a welcome move, especially as apps, photos, and videos continue to grow in size. Pricing is expected to remain unchanged, making this storage bump particularly appealing.

On the software side, the Galaxy S26 is expected to ship with Android 16 and One UI 8. Both the Galaxy S25 and S26 benefit from Samsung’s seven-year software update promise, though the newer device will naturally receive updates for an extra year.

Camera improvements

Camera upgrades on Samsung’s base Galaxy models have historically been conservative, but the Galaxy S26 may finally bring a meaningful change. The biggest rumored upgrade is a new 50MP ultrawide camera, replacing the 12MP sensor used on the Galaxy S25. This should result in sharper ultrawide shots, better low-light performance, and more consistent image quality across lenses.

The main 50MP wide camera and the 10MP 3x telephoto are expected to carry over from the Galaxy S25, as is the 12MP front-facing camera. While this may sound underwhelming, Samsung’s image processing improvements could still deliver better results overall.

The Galaxy S25 already performs well in camera benchmarks, and the improved ultrawide sensor on the S26 could push those scores even higher. Real-world comparisons will ultimately determine how significant the upgrade is.

Battery life and charging expectations

Battery capacity is another area seeing a modest improvement. The Galaxy S26 is rumored to include a 4300 mAh battery, up from 4000 mAh in the Galaxy S25. While this is a step in the right direction, it still lags behind some competitors adopting newer silicon-carbon battery technology.

The Galaxy S25 delivers average battery life by flagship standards, and the extra 300 mAh in the S26 should result in slightly longer screen-on time. However, expectations should remain realistic, as the increase is unlikely to dramatically change daily usage patterns.

Charging speeds are expected to remain unchanged. The Galaxy S25 supports 25W wired charging, and the S26 is likely to stick with the same limit. Wireless charging may see an improvement, as the Galaxy S26 is rumored to support Qi2 with built-in magnets for better alignment and accessory support, similar to MagSafe-style ecosystems.

Should you upgrade from the Galaxy S25 to the Galaxy S26?

The Galaxy S26 appears to be a classic example of Samsung’s iterative refinement strategy. It brings a cleaner design, a slightly larger and potentially brighter display, a more powerful chipset, improved storage options, a better ultrawide camera, and a modest battery increase. None of these changes alone are groundbreaking, but together they make the Galaxy S26 a more polished and future-proof device.

For Galaxy S25 owners, the upgrade decision depends largely on priorities. If you value better performance, more base storage, and camera improvements, the Galaxy S26 will be appealing. However, if your S25 still performs well and battery life meets your needs, skipping a generation may be the more sensible choice.

For users coming from older Galaxy models, the Galaxy S26 is shaping up to be a well-rounded flagship that balances performance, design, and long-term software support, making it a strong entry point into Samsung’s ecosystem.
