Google is reportedly working on a brand-new operating system, tentatively named Aluminium OS, which could shake up the desktop OS landscape. Known for its dominance in mobile with Android and for driving ChromeOS adoption on lightweight notebooks, Google is now taking the next step in combining these two platforms into a single, unified system.

The news of Aluminium OS comes from a job listing that sought a Senior Product Manager for a “new Aluminium, Android-based operating system,” further hinting that the new platform will incorporate AI at its core. The name “Aluminium” seems to suggest a connection to Chromium, the open-source project behind Chrome, potentially making this a more customizable and versatile OS.

As of now, there’s little concrete information about the timeline for the Aluminium OS’s release or how Google plans to position it in the market. Still, the job listing suggests that it will target a wide range of devices, from entry-level hardware to premium machines, similar to the approach seen with Android and ChromeOS.

This is a bold move for Google, but the new operating system will have tough competition from established players like Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s macOS. For now, the development of Aluminium OS remains in its early stages, and it will be interesting to see how Google positions it against the long-standing dominance of Windows and macOS in the desktop space.
