Microsoft has announced plans to improve the Windows 11 taskbar, offering users more customization options. Many have requested greater flexibility since the OS launched, and Microsoft is now delivering. Sources familiar with the company’s plans report that a movable taskbar will arrive this summer.
Taskbar Customization Returns to Windows 11
In Windows 10, users could drag the taskbar to any side of the screen, positioning it vertically or horizontally. However, Windows 11 removed this feature. Microsoft will now bring it back, allowing users to move the taskbar to the top, left, or right of their screen.
Additionally, Microsoft plans to let users adjust the taskbar’s size. Currently, Windows 11 allows resizing to fit two rows of apps, but it doesn’t let users shrink the taskbar further. This new feature will give users more control over their desktop’s appearance.
PowerToys and Other Updates for Windows 11
Microsoft’s PowerToys development team is also experimenting with a new “Command Palette Dock” for Windows 11. The dock will sit at the top of the desktop, providing shortcuts, media controls, and more. This update will make these tools easier to access than through the Quick Settings menu.
These improvements align with comments from Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s president of Windows and Devices. He stated that the company is focused on addressing user complaints. “We need to improve Windows in ways that are meaningful for people,” he said, highlighting the focus on performance, reliability, and the overall user experience.
