Microsoft has hinted at a major leap in Windows 12 features, with executives confirming that the next-generation operating system will bring multimodal, AI-powered interactions.
Speaking on the Windows IT Pro podcast, Pavan Davuluri, Corporate Vice President of Windows and Devices, said future versions of Windows will offer experiences far beyond traditional mouse-and-keyboard navigation. Instead, voice, pen, touch, and on-device AI will combine to create what he described as “a more capable and interactive” interface.
“We now have AI models that can run directly on-device. These bring entirely new capabilities to the platform and will transform how users interact with Windows,” Davuluri explained.
AI at the Core of Windows 12
Microsoft’s upcoming OS is expected to integrate AI into its very foundation. Features like Windows Copilot and M365 Copilot will not just be add-ons, but deeply embedded within the system. This shift could allow smarter tool orchestration, better contextual understanding, and stronger edge computing performance, all powered by on-device AI models.
Multimodal Interaction for Accessibility
One of the most exciting Windows 12 features will be its focus on accessibility. Davuluri emphasized that users will be able to speak, write, or draw simultaneously, with Windows intelligently interpreting intent. This promises new freedom for professionals, creatives, and users with accessibility needs.
“You should be able to speak to your computer while inking or interacting with someone else — and the computer should semantically understand you,” he noted.
Windows 12 Timeline: Not Just Yet
Despite speculation, Windows 12 is unlikely to launch immediately. Microsoft only recently confirmed Windows 11 25H2, scheduled for release later this year, alongside the official end-of-life of Windows 10 in October.
Windows 11 adoption itself has been slower than expected, with many users reluctant to leave Windows 10. However, as Davuluri suggests, Windows 12 could be the true turning point, offering a compelling enough feature set to encourage mass migration.
The Future of Windows
Microsoft envisions a computing environment where AI is intrinsic, multimodal input is seamless, and user experience is ambient across devices. From Copilot Plus PCs to advanced voice capabilities, Windows 12 features are set to redefine personal computing.
The next few years will determine whether Microsoft can convert this ambitious vision into widespread adoption, but one thing is clear: Windows 12 marks the beginning of a new AI-first era for operating systems.
