Hardware Research 750/275 – 275 MHz G3 Rackmount Mac Clone with Dual-CPU Support

The Hardware Research 604e/200 was a cost-effective rackmount Mac clone released in early 1998. Powered by a single 200 MHz PowerPC 604e processor, it provided workstation-grade performance within a durable 19-inch rackmount chassis. Built on Apple’s Tsunami logic board architecture, the machine offered excellent expandability for video, audio, and scientific workflows.

Outfitted with 128 MB of RAM, SCSI storage, and a 4 MB ATI XCLAIM 3D graphics card, this Mac-compatible clone was particularly popular among server environments and creative professionals who required rack-based deployment and robust Mac OS support.

Design, Use Case & Legacy

The Hardware Research 604e/200 targeted users looking for dependable PowerPC performance in server racks or studio setups. While not the fastest in the lineup, its configuration was ideal for small-scale media production, file serving, or legacy Mac OS testing.

Its full-size PCI slots and SCSI architecture gave it serious versatility for the time. The daughtercard slot allowed for future upgrades, including adding a second processor, extending the machine’s usefulness.

Even today, vintage Mac enthusiasts recognize the 604e/200 for its rare blend of affordability, expandability, and Mac compatibility in a rugged industrial package.
