Hardware Research 750/275 – 275 MHz G3 Rackmount Mac Clone with Dual-CPU Support

The Hardware Research 604e/233 was released in early 1998 as a rackmountable Mac clone based on the robust Tsunami logic board architecture. Designed for performance in professional and server environments, this model included a single 233 MHz PowerPC 604e processor, expandable memory, and full Mac OS compatibility up to version 9.0 (unofficially).

Despite being a single-CPU configuration by default, the Hardware Research 604e/233 was built with upgrade potential in mind, allowing users to add a second processor using a daughtercard. Paired with SCSI storage and a 4 MB ATI XCLAIM 3D video card, the unit supported demanding workflows common in video production, research, and publishing.

Overview and Performance Insights

Engineered for modularity and power, the Hardware Research 604e/233 provided users with plenty of PCI expansion and RAM scalability, along with solid video output through the ATI XCLAIM card. Its robust SCSI architecture delivered dependable disk performance for media-centric applications.

The rackmount form factor made this model particularly appealing to studios and institutional users looking to consolidate power into server racks without compromising compatibility or upgrade flexibility. Even decades later, it’s remembered for its rare blend of Mac OS support and rack-mounted durability.
