Amazon Vega OS Launch
Amazon has officially introduced Amazon Vega OS, a new Linux-based operating system that will power its Fire TV devices. This marks a major shift from Fire OS, which was based on Android. Vega OS is built with React Native, allowing developers to build apps more efficiently, but Amazon faces the challenge of convincing app creators to adopt the new platform.
The first product to run on Amazon Vega is the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, launched recently with support for 4K and HDR10+. Amazon described Vega OS as “responsive and highly efficient,” designed to offer smoother performance and faster integration with cloud-based applications.
Features of Amazon Vega O
Unlike Fire OS, Vega OS will not allow sideloading of apps. Instead, users will be limited to downloads from the Amazon Appstore. While this ensures greater security, it may limit flexibility for some users. To address developer adoption, Amazon has introduced a Cloud App program that helps port existing Android apps to Vega OS, covering associated cloud costs for nine months.
In addition, Amazon Vega O is built to support cloud-based gaming services such as Xbox Gaming and Amazon Luna. This makes Fire TV devices more competitive in the streaming and gaming space, bridging entertainment and interactive content.
Transition from Fire OS
Although Amazon is moving forward with Vega OS for new devices, existing Fire TV products running on Fire OS will continue to receive support. This dual-system approach allows current users to retain functionality while encouraging new customers to adopt the upgraded ecosystem.
The arrival of Amazon Vega OS signals Amazon’s ambition to control its own platform more tightly, reduce reliance on Android, and create a seamless app ecosystem. As more devices launch with Vega OS pre-installed, the company aims to establish a stronger position in the smart TV and streaming market.
